How a DWI can impact your finances

If you are convicted of DWI in Texas, you will be required to pay a surcharge for three years from the date of your conviction if you want to keep your license. The surcharge, unfortunately, can hurt you in the wallet. The following is a breakdown of DWI surcharges in Texas:

• First time offender – Any DWI conviction requires a surcharge of $1,000.00 to be paid annually for three years to receive your driver's license when you are eligible to get it back.
• Second time offender (prior conviction within three years) – Any DWI conviction requires a surcharge of $1,500.00 to be paid annually for three years, in order for you to receive your driver's license back when you are eligible.
• DWI conviction in which your blood-alcohol content was 0.16 or greater – You must pay a $2,000.00 surcharge per year, for three years.
